KALTENBACH - New Innovations at the Industry Event for Steel Experts

At the IPS (International Partners in Steel) event from 11 to 15 May 2009, the automation of steel fabrication and plate processing will take centre stage. The theme of the event will be "Automation: If Steel is your Deal" where KALTENBACH and more than 30 partner companies will present innovative solutions for the automation of the process chain in steel stockholding and fabrication. Jörg Tetling, Marketing Director of the KALTENBACH Group, describes what awaits visitors.

Why should visitors not miss the IPS 2009?

Jörg Tetling: Because they can experience first hand the current topics that are affecting the steel processing industry today, and because it is, plainly and simply, THE international trade fair for steel stockholding and steel fabrication. At the IPS more than 30 notable partner companies, covering more than 3,000 square meters of exhibition space will introduce their technological innovations in practice-oriented demonstrations and presentations. Visitors also can get a look behind the scenes at leading steel suppliers and steel producers on practical tours. We look forward to welcoming some 2,500 visitors from more than 35 countries to Lörrach.

What is KALTENBACH planning to present with regard to automation?

Jörg Tetling: We hear from our customers in the steel trade that important economic success factors include logistics, i.e., the flow of materials and data, and the productivity of machines and installations. As manufacturers of sawing and drilling machines and also machines for steel fabrication and plate processing, we can optimally support our customers - particularly when it comes to the flow of materials and data. KALTENBACH will thus be presenting for the first time what will be the absolute highlight of this year's IPS - a process-reliable, integrated automation concept for the processing of steel and steel plate. We see a huge potential for savings here for operators of the installations.

Can you already provide concrete numbers for these savings?

Jörg Tetling: Our integrated automation concept for the processing of steel and steel plate allows steel producers and steel stockholders to run their installations noticeably more economically. Through the experience of a number of customers who have already successfully implemented this technology, the availability - and therefore the utilisation and productivity - of the installations can increase by some 30 percent due to the higher level of automation. That's an impressive number.

What other innovations are going to be on show?

Jörg Tetling: With our T-13 transport system we have also achieved something special. Some of our customers have often experienced the problem of an ear-splitting noise being created when steel sections are cross transported, often to the anger of nearby residents. The solution: what we have termed as "silencers." This system will revolutionise transport technology in steel fabrication and steel supply. It really has to be seen and (not) heard!

In addition to this, we will be showing the KPS 520 for the first time at the IPS 2009. This is the fastest punching and shearing machine in the world! This is an outstanding machine due to its large tool magazine and accelerated process times.

In the area of all-purpose machines we will be presenting an extremely fast, high-performance straight cutting saw for hard metals. Some of the major features of the MSK 471 are its minimal cut-off lengths, short cycle times and extremely flexible, fully-automated section-sorting feature.

Over the past several decades KALTENBACH has gone from being a manufacturer of all-purpose machines to a full-range supplier for steel fabrication and steel stockholding. What are the advantages of this for your customers?

Jörg Tetling: As far as setting up installations for steel section and steel plate processing goes, our customers prefer to deal with a single point of contact - and rightly so: As a system provider, KALTENBACH offers all our services as a package, from planning to implementation to after-sales service. Steel fabricators and stockholders around the world depend on our experience and core competence. We guarantee dependable and efficient solutions and ensure stable productivity and flexibility at the highest level. Where our range of products for sawing, drilling, coping, flame cutting, punching, shearing, gauging and transporting ends, our partners take over with their products for storage, shot blasting, surface treatment, bending and welding etc. Further proof of this can be seen through our newly-built "KALTENBACH Technology Centre" (KTC) here in Lörrach, which is truly unique. Our complete range of all-purpose machines and products for steel fabrication and steel stockholding can be seen here.
